Notes from School Garden Network meeting at Trevecca University March 10th

Heather announced a number of learning opportunities

1. 7th Annual Conference – Antioch at Lakeshore – TN organic Growers Association

2. School Garden Conference – April 9th 10-3 p.m. with workshops on gardening skills and classroom curriculum (she asked for proposals to present)

3. Backyard Garden Training – April 2nd includes Chickens as pets

Each participant receives a resource kit with $200 worth of materials and resources these include teaching materials, cds, teacher’s manuals, posters, student materials, maps, lab guides etc. FREE continental breakfast and LUNCH are provided --- What more could they do but provide limousine service to your door!?

“Food Summit 2011 – Growing an Agenda for Change”

featuring Keynote Speaker Anim Steele of The Food Project and Real Food Challenge

Community Food Advocates, in partnership with the Nashville Food Policy Council, will host Food Summit 2011 on May 7th, 2011, from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm. The Summit will be a gathering of stakeholders – from farm to fork – across Nashville’s diverse food system.



Issues that face school gardens

1. Using produce in the school cafeteria
2. Earning money ---Accounting issue ---- running it through PTO? Separate entity
3. If we use the garden as a classroom – we must meet ADA compliance -- Metro schools can help with this….also if we build any structure we must go through Metro schools office for placement and help with design to fit into long-term plans for space use.

1. Dr. Chris Farrell of Trevecca --- offers support and help with planning and use of the greenhouse for early planting or winter planting
